PBE Refractory Inspections (API936)

API 936 is a widely recognized standard developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API) for the inspection, testing, and use of refractory materials in the petrochemical and refining industries (the standards are applicable to a much wider scope of industries though). It provides guidelines and recommendations for the installation & inspection of refractory linings in various process equipment and furnaces. Here are key aspects which is outlined in API 936:

  1. Documentation: Owner specification and/or contractor execution plan. Objective: Define job-specific work scope.

  2. Material qualification: Testing at independent or manufacturer’s laboratory. Inspector directs sampling, monitors specimen preparation and witnesses testing. Objective: Confirm that materials manufactured for the job meet the specified physical property standards.

  3. Applicator qualification: Contractor demonstration of capabilities in simulated installation which is witnessed and inspected by the inspector. Objective: Confirm that equipment and personnel are capable of installing qualified materials to specified standards.

  4. Installation monitoring: Inspector monitors contractor work and test sample preparation. Objective: Confirm that specifications, good practice and installation procedures are followed.

  5. As-installed testing: Inspector coordinates sampling and testing of as-installed materials. Objective: Confirm that installed materials meet specified physical property standards.

  6. Pre-dryout inspection: Inspector performs visual/hammer test inspection of applied linings.. Objective: Confirm that installed linings meet specification standards.

  7. Dryout monitoring: For dryout prior to normal startup of equipment, the inspector monitors heating rates and hold times. Objective: Confirm that agreed upon procedure is followed.

  8. Post dryout inspection: Inspector performs visual/hammer test inspection of applied linings. Objective: Confirm that installed linings meet specification standards.

It’s important to note that API 936 provides general guidelines, and specific industries or facilities may have additional requirements or procedures. Consulting the API 936 standard directly or seeking guidance from qualified inspectors and refractory experts is recommended to ensure compliance and effective inspection practices.
